Bowen

What is Bowen?

‘Bowen’ is a gentle remedial therapy developed by Tom Bowen in Australia in the 1950s. The technique uses fingers and thumbs with light rolling movements over specific parts of the body. This frees up areas of restriction or tension enabling the body to realign.

Bowen is not like massage as no lotions or oils are used, and no manipulation, force, or pressure applied. The procedure takes place with the body clothed, although I recommend loose clothing. Men may want to bring shorts or tracksuit bottoms to change into. As it is so subtle, Bowen can be used for adults, children, and babies.

The body often compensates for a problem in a completely different area. Therefore it may seem odd that moves on the hamstrings can be used to help neck pain. Bowen practitioners do not diagnose or treat single conditions but see and treat the body as a whole.

The aim of a Bowen session is to balance and stimulate the body's energy flow, encouraging self-healing.

After Bowen therapy, general and individual after-care advice is given.
